The Lagos State Government has recorded a major milestone in inclusive maternal and child health with the successful hosting of the first Male Engagement Meeting under the Men in Maternity Pilot Programme.
Eko Hot News reports that the meeting, organised by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), was held at the Ikosi Primary Health Centre and brought together expectant fathers participating in the new initiative.

The programme aims to enhance male involvement in maternal, newborn, and child health by educating fathers on their roles during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and family planning.
During the session, participants engaged in open discussions, practical demonstrations, and interactive activities designed to strengthen empathy and improve family health outcomes.

A notable highlight was the use of the Empathy Belly pregnancy simulator, which allowed men to experience physical sensations similar to pregnancy, helping to deepen understanding and respect for maternal challenges.
The Permanent Secretary of LSPHCB, Dr Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, commended the fathers for their willingness to learn, describing the engagement as a progressive step in improving maternal health in Lagos.

He also expressed appreciation to UNFPA and senior officials of the Board, including Dr Veronica Iwayemi and Mrs Olasumbo Oyesanya, for their contributions to the programme’s success.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Reproductive Health and Family Planning team as well as facilitators, CNO Aderemi Ashiru and CNO Oluwakemi Faluyi, for their coordination and support.

As part of the initiative, attendees received the Father-Focused family planning and Postnatal Care Pamphlet, developed to equip men with essential knowledge for supporting their partners and building healthier families.
