The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has intensified its enforcement activities to mark World Health Day, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the health and safety of residents.

Eko Hot News reports that the agency disclosed that it recently conducted a large-scale inspection across more than 200 stores and supermarkets in Lagos. The operation led to the discovery and removal of expired and substandard products from circulation.

According to the General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, the seized items posed serious risks to consumers. He noted that ensuring product safety remains a top priority for the agency.

Solebo stated that businesses found violating regulations were sanctioned. He emphasized that compliance with consumer protection laws is mandatory for all vendors and manufacturers.

The agency operates dedicated units for research, monitoring, and enforcement. These departments work together to identify and remove unsafe products from the market.

He revealed that about 80 percent of hazardous products are linked to improper storage and handling. This highlights the need for improved awareness among manufacturers and distributors.

Solebo urged businesses to educate the public on proper storage practices. Maintaining product quality, he said, is essential for consumer safety.

He also advised consumers to remain vigilant when making purchases. Checking expiry dates, labels, and packaging quality can help prevent health risks.

Residents were encouraged to report cases of consumer rights violations. Prompt reporting allows the agency to respond quickly and take necessary action.

The General Manager noted that LASCOPA has continued to invest in public sensitisation campaigns. These initiatives aim to educate consumers on safe product usage and handling.

He warned against exposing bottled liquids to excessive heat or sunlight. Such conditions can affect product quality and introduce harmful substances.

Consumers were also advised to avoid reusing single-use plastic bottles. This practice, he explained, may compromise safety, especially when used for drinking water.

Solebo encouraged Lagosians to patronise vendors who maintain proper storage standards. Responsible purchasing decisions contribute to overall public health.

He described health as a state of complete well-being beyond the absence of illness. Daily consumer choices, he added, play a key role in maintaining this balance.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and enforcement. Efforts will be sustained to ensure safer markets and protect consumer rights.
