The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to developing a sustainable and globally competitive gemstone and jewelry industry.
Eko Hot News reports that this was highlighted at the 2025 Gemstone and Jewelry Conference and Exhibition (GGCE), held at the Oriental Hotel from November 26 to 28.

The event, themed “Accelerating Collaboration for Sustainable Gold and Gem Development in Africa,” brought together operators, policymakers, investors and artisans within the gemstone value chain.
Representing the Special Adviser on Mineral Resources, Engr. Abiola Olowu, Geologist Oluremi Williams presented Lagos State’s long-term blueprint for strengthening its mineral sector.

He noted that although Lagos is known as Nigeria’s commercial hub and a global creative centre, it also hosts valuable mineral deposits that remain under-recognised.
According to him, Lagos possesses silica sand, clay, bitumen, gravel and newly discovered crude oil, all of which have strong economic potential if sustainably developed.
Williams said the conference offered an opportunity to correct public perception and showcase Lagos’ mineral wealth and emerging sectoral prospects.
Olowu’s representative outlined a three-point agenda: creating a conducive policy environment, building critical infrastructure and fostering strategic partnerships.
He explained that the agenda aims to attract investors, support production and strengthen collaboration with miners, experts, academic institutions and private-sector innovators.
Williams added that these steps will support Lagos’ diversification efforts and ensure long-term sustainability in mineral development.
He reaffirmed government support for artisans, jewelers, miners and young creatives through training platforms, tools and market opportunities.
He emphasised that Lagos’ greatest asset is the creativity of its people, noting that their skills remain central to building a competitive gemstone industry.
Stakeholders at the GGCE praised Lagos for taking a leadership role in driving sustainable mineral development and strengthening Africa’s gemstone network.
They noted that the conference has evolved into a major continental platform connecting jewelers, miners, investors and technology innovators.
As the exhibition continues, Lagos is expected to deepen partnerships, strengthen policies and promote innovation-driven mining practices.
The conference further underscores Lagos’ vision to grow a thriving gemstone economy that boosts exports, creates jobs and enhances Nigeria’s global presence.
