The Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Court has commenced a two-day strategic retreat to strengthen its operations and expand coverage across the state. The retreat, themed “The Mandate of Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Court: Strategies for the Path Ahead,” was held at Amber Residence, GRA, Ikeja.

Eko Hot News reports that the retreat focused on repositioning the Mobile Court as a decentralised, on-the-spot judicial mechanism to address minor offences efficiently. Discussions centred on improving operational reach and delivering swift justice.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, represented by Solicitor-General Mr Hameed Oyenuga, said the Court remains firmly grounded in law and due process. He described it as an extension of the formal judicial system, not an alternative to it.

Pedro outlined the Court’s mandate, including swift adjudication of traffic, environmental, sanitation, and public nuisance offences. He noted its impact in decongesting conventional courts and improving regulatory compliance.

He, however, acknowledged that the Court’s current reach is limited compared to the scale of infractions across Lagos. He called for statewide expansion, improved coordination, data-driven operations, and strict adherence to human rights standards.

Coordinator of the Mobile Court, Mr Olufemi Adekunle, described the retreat as timely for strategic planning. He emphasised professionalism, consistency in adjudication, and respect for citizens’ rights.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, CSP Adetayo Akerele, reaffirmed enforcement agencies’ commitment to lawful and disciplined operations. He stressed synergy between enforcement and judicial officers.

The retreat also reviewed collaboration with agencies, including LASTMA, LAWMA, FRSC, KAI, LAMATA, VIS, and RRS. It is expected to produce actionable strategies for improved efficiency and broader coverage across LGAs and LCDAs.
