The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that ongoing regeneration and beautification projects on Lagos Island will significantly improve the area’s infrastructure, environment, and quality of life for residents.

Eko Hot News reports that the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the remarks after inspecting the Adeniji-Adele underbridge by Oja Oba, Aroloya, and the under-bridge behind Ebute Ero Police Station. He stated the initiatives aim to enhance drainage, reduce flood risks, and provide recreational facilities.

The Commissioner highlighted that the Oja Oba and Idumota underbridges are set for transformation, with proposed amenities including public toilets, green spaces, a table tennis court, and other sporting facilities.

He noted that contractors are finalising designs and coordinating with local authorities to meet state standards.

Wahab added that other underbridges, including Obalende and Ijora, have already been cleared and are being redeveloped. Progress is being made in phases, with some projects expected to be completed in six to 14 months.

He urged residents to be patient, likening temporary disruptions to “labour pains” necessary for long-term improvements.

On environmental sanitation, the Commissioner emphasised that Lagos’ challenge lies not in waste generation but in citizen discipline. He warned that markets and traders illegally dumping waste on expressways, including the Badagry Expressway, will face strict enforcement measures.

He encouraged residents to maintain clean environments independently, ahead of the formal declaration of Monthly Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management, saying individual responsibility is crucial to sustaining a cleaner Lagos.

The Lagos Island regeneration is part of the State Government’s broader plan to combine urban development with community welfare, ensuring a safer, more vibrant, and resilient metropolitan environment.
