The Lagos State Government has acknowledged public concerns over waste accumulation in parts of the state and outlined urgent measures being implemented to restore cleanliness and efficiency in waste evacuation.

Eko Hot News reports that the situation is largely linked to the ongoing decommissioning of the Olusosun landfill, which has required a major adjustment in waste disposal logistics across Lagos.

According to the government, refuse that was previously disposed of at Olusosun is now being redirected to alternative landfill facilities located in Epe and Badagry. This shift has increased travel distances and turnaround times for some Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators.

The extended haulage routes, officials explained, have temporarily strained evacuation capacity in certain areas, leading to delays and visible waste build-up at identified locations.

To address the challenge, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been directed to provide immediate intervention support in communities where PSP operators are currently overwhelmed. These interventions are already ongoing across several waste black spots in the state.

The government also disclosed that discussions are underway to procure and deploy additional waste evacuation trucks. This move is expected to strengthen LAWMA’s operational capacity, reduce response times, and improve overall efficiency in waste collection.

Beyond emergency interventions, Lagos State has intensified enforcement efforts to curb illegal waste disposal. A dedicated Task Force has been established to tackle indiscriminate dumping, particularly along major roads and areas affected by illegal roadside trading.

The Task Force will operate round-the-clock surveillance and enforcement, with full authority to apply environmental laws without exception. Authorities say this is critical to preventing practices that worsen waste accumulation and degrade the urban environment.

Residents have also been urged to celebrate responsibly during social events and festivities by disposing of waste properly through approved PSP operators and avoiding littering in public spaces.

The state government acknowledged the inconvenience experienced by residents but reaffirmed its commitment to a cleaner, more orderly, and sustainable Lagos, stressing that the current challenges are being addressed through deliberate and targeted actions.

Officials called on Lagosians to continue partnering with the government by patronising only registered PSP operators and adhering strictly to responsible waste disposal practices to achieve a healthier city.
