Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Sanwo-Olu, noted that Lagos’ environmental policies provide a framework to support biodegradable alternatives and expressed willingness to partner with Polymateria in advancing these initiatives.

Mr Ogunbanjo presented Polymateria’s innovative technology designed to transform conventional plastics into biodegradable materials that break down without leaving microplastics or toxic residues.

Sir Andrew Webster, Chief Strategy Officer of Polymateria, explained that the chemical transformation occurs in two to three months in high-heat, high-humidity climates like Africa, with natural biological degradation completing the cycle in under 24 months.

The delegation highlighted that the technology is already adopted by major brands in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and other emerging markets, meeting internationally recognised environmental and safety standards.

Plans for a pilot project in Lagos will involve 50 tons of plastics, in partnership with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and other regulatory agencies, to test and validate the technology locally.

Concerns from the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Biodun Ogunleye, Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs Titi Oshodi, and Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, were addressed with assurances that the solution is scalable for both large manufacturers and small-scale producers.
