The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared full support for the renewed call by Southwest governors urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fast-track the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.

Eko Hot News reports that the party’s position was conveyed by its spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, who described the appeal by the governors as “timely, forthright and pragmatic,” especially in the face of rising security threats across the country. He emphasised that only those opposed to national stability would reject the push for state-controlled policing, which he said is long overdue.

Oladejo explained that the Southwest has, for years, championed a modern, decentralised, and community-based security structure capable of responding swiftly to evolving security concerns. He noted that the latest call by the governors reflects unity of purpose, responsible leadership, and a clear grasp of the realities confronting Nigeria’s security architecture.

According to him, the position of the Southwest governors aligns with the long-standing progressive ideals of the APC, which holds that security must be localised for it to be effective. He added that President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated political will in reforming and strengthening internal security measures nationwide. The renewed advocacy from the region, he said, reinforces the President’s commitment to building a responsive, technology-driven, and people-centred security framework.

The Lagos APC maintained that the need for State Police is not only logical but inevitable, given the complex security challenges Nigeria faces. The party argued that a multi-layered policing system would bring law enforcement closer to the grassroots, improve intelligence gathering, strengthen community trust, and deter crime in real time. Properly designed and professionally regulated State Police, it added, would complement federal structures rather than oppose them.

Highlighting the Southwest’s track record, Oladejo pointed to the Amotekun Corps and consistent regional investments in local security infrastructure as clear proof that decentralised security can succeed. He said the establishment of the State Police is simply the next step toward building a safer country.

The Lagos APC reaffirmed its firm backing for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope security agenda and commended the unified stance of Southwest leaders. The party urged Nigerians across all political divides to support efforts aimed at creating a safer and more stable environment for all citizens.

“The security of our people is non-negotiable. The time for State Police is not just ripe — it is overdue,” Oladejo stated, calling on stakeholders nationwide to unite behind the push for a strengthened and community-oriented policing system that responds directly to local needs.

With insecurity on the rise, the Lagos APC insists that the nation cannot afford further delays and must embrace bold reforms capable of safeguarding lives, property, and national stability.
