The new Permanent Secretary, Health Service Commission (HSC), Dr Abimbola Mabogunje, has commenced the 2026 Hospital Transformation Support Initiative (HTSI) with on-the-spot assessments of key public hospitals in Lagos.
Eko Hot News reports that the exercise began with visits to Massey Street Children’s Hospital, General Hospital Odan, and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, all located on Lagos Island.
Dr Mabogunje explained that the initiative is aimed at assessing the level of development in public hospitals, ongoing projects, and identifying areas where the Commission can provide additional support to strengthen healthcare delivery.
She noted that the visits will help the HSC gain first-hand insight into how facilities are functioning and what interventions are required to improve services for Lagos residents.

According to her, understanding existing challenges is critical to ensuring that citizens receive quality healthcare at all times.
During the visits, hospital management teams were asked to outline operational challenges affecting progress, with assurances that pressing issues would receive the Commission’s attention.
The HTSI team toured wards, departments, and key service areas to assess infrastructure, service delivery, and staff welfare.

Dr. Mabogunje stressed that the initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to people-centred healthcare reforms across the state.
She added that feedback from the hospitals would inform future policy decisions and targeted interventions.
The Hospital Transformation Support Initiative is expected to extend to the remaining 26 General Hospitals across Lagos State in the coming weeks.
The HSC reaffirmed its resolve to work closely with hospital leadership to improve efficiency, service quality, and patient outcomes.
