The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has said Nigeria no longer needs passive graduates but active citizens who can provide solutions to the nation’s challenges.
Eko Hot News reports that Hamzat made the statement in Osogbo, Osun State, while delivering the 15th Convocation Lecture of Fountain University, Osogbo, where he served as Chairman of the occasion.
The Deputy Governor, who was represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr. Layode Olanrewaju, spoke against concerns that many young graduates fall short of the demands of the modern labour market.
He advised the graduating students to view the convocation as a transition into a new phase of life that comes with responsibility, resilience, and compassion.
Hamzat urged the graduands to move beyond academic success and apply the skills and values imbibed in them to real-life situations and societal challenges.

According to him, the world requires graduates who are problem-solvers, innovators, and contributors to national development rather than passive observers.
He noted that while universities provide specialised knowledge and critical thinking skills, graduates must also develop wisdom and compassion to navigate life effectively.
Hamzat encouraged the students to continuously re-evaluate their ideas, think creatively, and remain open to learning from diverse experiences.
He stressed that graduates have a responsibility to help bridge divisions and contribute positively to shaping a shared future for society.
The Deputy Governor added that compassion, ethical leadership, and a commitment to service are essential qualities for graduates seeking to make lasting impact.
He charged the students to remain adaptable, proactive, and ready to deploy their trained minds in various professional and personal encounters.
Hamzat concluded by encouraging the graduates to see themselves as active citizens capable of driving progress and transformation in Nigeria.
