The Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment in Lagos State, Folashade Bada Ambrose, has called on policymakers at federal and state levels to adopt stronger gender-affirmative policies that address barriers affecting women in education, employment, entrepreneurship and leadership.

Eko Hot News reports that Ambrose made the call while speaking at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration organised by the United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria in partnership with the Danish International Development Agency.

The commissioner noted that gender equality remains a key driver of inclusive economic growth and sustainable development. She explained that closing the gender gap in employment and leadership could significantly boost productivity and strengthen national competitiveness.

According to Ambrose, several global studies show that economies benefit when women are fully integrated into the workforce. She stated that equal participation in employment opportunities can increase national output and expand economic growth across sectors.

She added that in some economies, equal employment participation could increase GDP per capita by more than eight per cent. Such improvements, she noted, would benefit families, communities, businesses and governments alike.

Ambrose emphasised that gender inclusion is not only a social responsibility but also an economic strategy. She said empowering women through education, financial access and leadership opportunities helps create a more balanced and innovative society.

The commissioner called on policymakers to move beyond commitments and focus on practical actions that remove structural barriers. These include policies that promote equal pay, fair recruitment systems, access to business funding and improved representation of women in decision-making roles.

She explained that many women still face challenges in business ownership and political participation despite their strong contributions to national development. Addressing these challenges, she said, will open new pathways for economic expansion and innovation.

Ambrose also highlighted the importance of leadership opportunities for women in shaping policies and industry growth. She noted that diverse leadership perspectives strengthen decision-making processes and help build resilient institutions.

Speaking on the theme of the event, “Bridging the Gender Gap: Turning Intent into Action,” the commissioner said the message serves as a call for measurable progress. She encouraged stakeholders to transform commitments into policies that create lasting impact.

She further urged organisations, government institutions and development partners to collaborate on programmes that support women and girls. According to her, such partnerships can improve education access, mentorship opportunities and career advancement.

Ambrose reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to policies that promote economic inclusion and gender equality. She noted that Lagos continues to support initiatives that empower women across multiple sectors.

Participants at the event discussed strategies for improving gender representation in leadership and expanding opportunities for women in business and innovation. The dialogue also explored ways to strengthen mentorship, training and financial access for female entrepreneurs.

Ambrose reiterated that empowering women ultimately benefits the entire society. She noted that when women thrive in education, business and leadership, communities become stronger and economies grow more sustainably.
