Lagos State has inaugurated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Clubs across public primary schools as part of efforts to raise responsible future leaders.

Eko Hot News reports that the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of SDGs, Mrs Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, described the initiative as a strategic step toward embedding sustainability values early in young learners.

She explained that the programme aims to nurture a just, inclusive, and sustainable future for Lagos by shaping character and promoting global awareness among pupils.
The initiative, championed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aligns with SDG 4 – Quality Education, ensuring that learning extends beyond literacy to responsibility and civic consciousness.

With over 3.3 million learners in Lagos, the government noted that early exposure to sustainability principles will inspire long-term behavioural change.
Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr Hakkem Babatunde Shittu, said the SDGs Clubs would promote value-based learning and empower pupils to become change-makers through collective and individual action.

He added that co-curricular engagement remains critical to developing leadership skills and social responsibility among young students.
Dignitaries at the event included Hon. Babatunde Adewale Jimoh, Chairman, Co-Curricular, LASUBEB; Board Secretary, Mr Lamidi Hakeem Abiodun; and key stakeholders from the education sector and SDGs Office.

The initiative reinforces Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustainable development and youth empowerment through education.
