The initiative, implemented by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, particularly its emphasis on education, technology, and workforce competitiveness.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tola Sule, described the programme as a direct response to the evolving demands of the modern economy, noting that employers now prioritise problem-solvers and innovators over certificate holders.

Sule said the intervention was designed to bridge the long-standing skills gap between academic learning and the fast-changing industrial landscape, enabling graduates to meet global labour expectations.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Adeniran Kasali, highlighted the importance of equipping Lagos graduates for global relevance, stressing that practical digital and entrepreneurial skills are essential for future success.

Kasali noted that the state aims to move students beyond theoretical classroom knowledge by empowering them with market-driven competencies.

Institutional leaders present at the event praised the initiative for complementing formal academic training and strengthening student development outcomes.

Deputy Provost (Administration) of LASCOHET, Dr Islamiyat Agoro, expressed appreciation for the state’s continued investment in students and affirmed the institution’s commitment to skills integration.

Representing Lagos State University (LASU), Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Abdufatai Abatan, commended students for their innovation and readiness to transition into professional roles.

Abatan said the skills gained through the programme would enable graduates to operate confidently in competitive environments.

Dean of Students Affairs at Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Dr Dawodu, emphasised the programme’s role in promoting self-reliance and reducing graduate unemployment.

He added that the entrepreneurial mindset developed through JIL could generate new business ideas and stimulate job creation across Lagos.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Affairs, Hon. Samuel Kapoo, encouraged participants to remain adaptable, reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a skilled and future-ready youth population.

The three-weekend programme featured intensive sessions covering digital tools, entrepreneurship, coding, and interview preparation, giving students exposure to industry-relevant skills.

The Lagos State Government described the JIL initiative as a long-term investment in young people, ensuring that graduates are equipped not only to seek jobs but to create opportunities for others.
