The Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET) has organised a one-day in-house training aimed at strengthening staff etiquette, workplace conduct, and overall institutional professionalism.

Eko Hot News reports that the training, themed “Etiquette: A Drive Towards Standardisation of Norms and Professionalism,” reflects LASCOHET’s renewed commitment to enhancing workplace culture, promoting ethical behaviour and improving service delivery within Nigeria’s pioneer College of Health Technology.

The workshop drew academic and non-academic staff from across departments, all eager to engage in conversations around best practices, ethical standards, behavioural improvements and the role of professional etiquette in building a productive academic community. The training marked a significant milestone for LASCOHET, as it was the first time the College would host such a holistic, etiquette-driven capacity-building session dedicated to strengthening internal operations and staff development.

Welcoming participants and facilitators, the Provost of LASCOHET, Professor Raheem Olasupo Akewushola, expressed great satisfaction with the impressive turnout. He noted that the enthusiasm shown by staff members was a positive indication that the College community values growth, improvement and continuous learning. Professor Akewushola stated that such programmes play a crucial role in reinforcing LASCOHET’s identity as a reputable health institution and ensuring that staff members demonstrate professionalism both within the institution and in their daily lives.

According to him, etiquette is not merely about courtesy but also a reflection of institutional values, organisational culture and personal integrity. He stressed that for LASCOHET to maintain its status as the pioneer College of Health Technology in Nigeria, staff must continually uphold behaviours that support discipline, high ethical standards and excellent service delivery. “We must understand the nitty-gritty of what we owe the public, and this training is a step in that direction,” the Provost added.

The lecture session of the workshop featured Professor Olufemi Jacob Fatile, who delivered a presentation titled “Application of Professional Ethics within an Academic Community.” In his insightful paper, Professor Fatile emphasised that the strength of any academic institution lies in the ethical conduct of its workforce. He explained that values such as honesty, integrity, fairness, responsibility and a dedication to excellence form the backbone of a globally respected academic community.

Professor Fatile stressed that breaches of ethics—no matter how minor—could distort institutional operations, undermine merit and erode trust. He encouraged staff to embrace professionalism not as an obligation but as a personal and collective responsibility needed to retain LASCOHET’s reputation and uphold the expectations of the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian public.

A complementary session was delivered by the Managing Director of Nisrel Consulting, Mr. Ope Amusan, who focused on behavioural traits that support personal and professional development. He introduced participants to the “7 Rules of Life,” which include: Let it go, Ignore them, Give it time, Do not compare, Stay calm, It’s on you, and Smile. According to him, these rules serve as simple yet powerful guides for managing workplace pressures, improving interpersonal relationships and creating a positive work environment.

Mr. Amusan explained that productivity is deeply connected to mental balance, emotional intelligence and behavioural discipline. By embracing positive daily habits and rejecting toxic behaviours, staff can contribute to a healthier institutional atmosphere.

The workshop concluded with a reaffirmation of LASCOHET’s commitment to regular training, staff development and policies that promote excellence across all departments. Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the lessons learned would enhance their workplace interactions and support better service delivery to students and the general public.

Overall, the training underscored LASCOHET’s mission to nurture a disciplined, efficient and ethically grounded workforce capable of sustaining the College’s leadership role in health education nationwide. The management assured that similar capacity-building programmes will continue regularly to deepen professionalism and reinforce LASCOHET’s longstanding legacy.
