The Federal Government has announced a two-week rehabilitation exercise on the damaged expansion joints of the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Eko Hot News reports that the repair work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and is expected to last for two weeks.

The Federal Ministry of Works said the intervention became necessary after the expansion joints exceeded their expected service life.

According to the ministry, the condition of the joints requires urgent attention to improve safety and ensure smoother movement along the busy expressway.

The repair exercise will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to traffic.

One half of the affected section will be closed at a time, while vehicles will use the other half under controlled traffic arrangements.

Traffic management personnel will be deployed throughout the rehabilitation exercise.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will assist with traffic control.

The agencies are expected to coordinate movement around the construction area and help reduce congestion.

Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been advised to plan their journeys ahead of time.

Road users have also been encouraged to consider alternative routes where convenient.

Suggested alternatives include the Ikorodu-Ogijo Road, Shimawa Bridge and the old road leading to Abeokuta.

The authorities said motorists who need to use the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will still be able to pass through the affected area.

However, movement through the construction zone will be subject to controlled traffic arrangements during the rehabilitation.

Motorists are therefore expected to obey instructions from traffic management personnel stationed along the route.

The Federal Government also appealed to road users to exercise patience throughout the two-week exercise.

Lagos State Government Takes Crucial Decision On Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road

Authorities said cooperation from motorists would help traffic officials manage the expected increase in vehicle movement around the affected section.

The Kara Bridge corridor is an important connection for motorists travelling between Lagos and Ogun State and other parts of the South-West.

The route carries significant daily traffic, making proper planning essential during major maintenance activities.

The phased approach is intended to allow repair work to proceed while maintaining access for road users.

Motorists who have flexible travel plans are encouraged to avoid the affected corridor when their journeys are not urgent.

Those who must travel through the area are advised to leave earlier than usual and allow additional time for their journeys.

Drivers are also encouraged to remain alert and follow temporary traffic arrangements around the construction zone.

The deployment of FRSC, TRACE and LASTMA personnel is expected to support the smooth implementation of the traffic management plan.

The agencies will work to guide motorists and maintain orderly movement throughout the rehabilitation period.

The repair of the expansion joints is expected to improve the condition of the affected section once the work is completed.

The intervention is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to maintain major highways and address sections requiring attention.

The ministry has urged motorists to cooperate with officials and avoid unnecessary delays by planning their routes in advance.

Road users can also monitor official traffic information for updates as the rehabilitation progresses.

Authorities emphasised that the temporary restrictions are necessary to allow the repair work to be completed safely and efficiently.

Motorists are advised not to disregard traffic instructions or attempt to bypass controlled sections of the road.

The success of the exercise will depend partly on cooperation between road users, contractors and traffic management agencies.

The Federal Government is therefore appealing for patience as work begins on September 8.

Once completed, the rehabilitation is expected to restore the affected expansion joints and improve the travelling experience along the Kara Bridge section.

For motorists, early planning and the use of alternative routes where appropriate could help reduce travel delays during the exercise.

The authorities have assured road users that access through the corridor will remain available under the phased traffic management arrangement.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, comply with instructions and make informed route choices throughout the two-week rehabilitation period.
